Local fashion + shopping for 9.17-9.23

Your local fashion & shopping news for 9.17-9.23: An MNfashion Week edition.

MNfashion Week events (originally posted on Vita.mn)

Every year, MNfashion Week seems to get more jam-packed with events spotlighting the fledgling local fashion industry. It kicks off early this weekend and continues through next Sunday. Here are some of this year's major to-dos:

[The ladies of La Nouvelle Femme; Image by Nic Marshall]

La Nouvelle Femme: Spotlighting local female talent in arts, fashion and music. Fashion duo Calpurnia Peach will show their fall and spring collections. Female-fronted bands Bella Koshka and Hildur Victoria and fine art and photography round out the night.

Envision: Ignite Modeling's biannual event is the biggest local fashion showcase of the year (next to Voltage), showcasing fall lines by 11 designers including Renate Adjei, Kjurek Couture and Amanda Christine. (8 p.m.-12:30 a.m. Fri., $20-$35.)

Charmed Life: Some of the crème de la crème of local design, including accessories by ROX by Robyne Robinson, Ruby3 and Ferociter; clothing by Max Lohrbach, Anthem Heart and Laura Fulk; and the new handbag collection by "Project Runway" contestant Christopher Straub. Bonus: Model Cheryl Tiegs will be in attendance. (6-9 p.m. Wed., $25.)

Couture Noir: The darker side of local fashion will be on display at this production by anime-meets-goth designer Mackenzie Labine. It should be worth it to see Labine's first new Oishiimomo collection in two years, along with new lines by neo-Victorian designers Blasphemina's Closet, Apatico and Danielle Everine. (9 p.m. Wed., $10.)

[A Fall 2009 look by kjurek couture; Image provided by Kimberly Jurek]

Kjurek Couture: Exclusively Fall: Kimberly Jurek's entire fall line will be on display at her solo runway show. Expect a rich palette with bohemian and gypsy touches in Jurek's signature modern, feminine silhouettes. Shown with the collection will be hair accessories by Anna Lee for Ruby 3. (8 p.m. Sept. 25. $20.)

[A SCENEaSOTA look by Emma Berg; Image by Stephanie Hynes]

Next Saturday: Maritza Ramirez takes a break from designing to produce her second SCENEaSOTA fashion show. Local fashion plate and mplsart.com director Emma Berg will show her debut collection. (7 p.m. Sept. 26. $10-20. Ignite Modeling Studios, 600 Washington Av. N., #101. Mpls.)

[A look from Elsworth; Image provided by Elsworth]

Also, menswear gets into the mix when Elsworth presents its Invigorate fashion show. (8 p.m.-1 a.m. Sept. 26. $20-30. The Lab Theater). Later, swing by Anthem Heart's studio for Worn to Be Wild: Anthem Heart Studios Series, a monthly live screen-printing session that kicks off with Matt Locher of Solid Gold, known for the band's handmade screened tees. (11 p.m.-3 a.m., free. Q.arma Building, 1224 NE. Quincy St., Mpls.)

Calpurnia Peach scarves
Local fashion denizens Calpurnia Peach just made it easier to wear one of their original screen-printed designs. The duo's fall collection includes screen-printed scarves in a variety of fabrics and colors, including this silk version ($40). They will debut the scarves, along with their charming, increasingly wearable line of mini-dresses, onesies and cropped jackets Friday at the Varsity Theater for the La Nouvelle Femme event. The scarves will be available after the show at Design Collective and Picky Girl.

[Charlie Bleached Tie Dye Denim in Black by 6126, $110 at OPM; Image provided]

Lindsay Lohan leggings
Upscale designer boutique OPM is the first Twin Cities shop to pick up Lohan's line of leggings, 6126, which hit the market in July. While some of the leggings go dangerously close to "Flashdance" territory (one pair even comes with attached knee pads), the zippered and lace versions should be the perfect complement to this fall's edgy '80s-inspired trends. ($42-$132. OPM, 3700 Grand Way, St. Louis Park, 952-567-7399.)

Project Runway screening at Hell's Kitchen
L'etoile's weekly viewing party for "Project Runway" & "Models of the Runway" kicks off at 8 p.m. with fashion trivia. This week's is hosted by Beth Hammarlund, L'etoile publisher, and her dashing boyfriend (and l'etoile BFF) Brian. (Trivia 8-9 p.m. Screening 9-11 p.m. Thursdays. 80 S. 9th St., Mpls., 612-332-4700.)

Through Saturday:
Junk Bonanza at Canterbury Park
As the saying goes, one person's junk is another person's treasure. That seems to be the thinking behind the Junk Bonanza, whose creators are clearly okay with calling their gems junk. More than 100 vendors will be selling everything from furniture to home accents to clothing and accessories and various odds and ends, with price points going all the way from 50 cents to $3,000. Minneapolis' Hunt & Gather joins with smaller vendors from across the Midwest to create their beautiful junky vignettes. There will also be book signings with Ki Nassauer, Bonanza founder, celebrity stylist Matthew Meade and the Farm Chicks. The press release promises "high-end salvage meets upscale flea market." (10 a.m.-5 p.m. Thu. 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Fri. & Sat. $6-20. 1100 Canterbury Rd., Shakopee. 952-445-7224.)

Drama Grand Re-opening Party
Celebrate the grand re-opening of local boutique Drama with drinks and a lively atmosphere provided by DJ ESP. The shop, which carries a tailored selection of fun-for-going-out tops, dresses, denim and jewelry from national lines as well as local designers Amanda Christine, kjurek couture, and Allison Quinnell. If you are one of the first 100 people to RSVP, you may snag a swag-filled goodie bag. (6-9 p.m. 1203 Lagoon Av., Mpls. 612-338-9423. RSVP to
shopatdrama.com.)

Through Sunday:
Up Six Anniversary Sale
Stock up at
Up Six Vintage’s anniversary sale. The Selby & Snelling vintage shop has loads of mid-century clothing, accessories, and jewelry, as well as home décor and furniture they want to clear out to stock up their fall/winter inventory. Take 30% off all vintage clothing and accessories, 20% off all jewelry, and 10-50% off all mid-century modern furnishings and housewares. (157 Snelling Ave. N., St. Paul. 651-917-0470.)

SATURDAY

E-Rock Out: Eric Inkala & Friends at First Amendment
One of my favorite local artists is headed for New York City, but not without having one last art exhibition that will double as a blowout going away party. He'll be joined by a slew of artist friends that are too many to name, but for one Anthem Heart will be offering up some new shirt designs commissioned from Inkala's sketch book as well as some new original t-shirt art. There will also be live music from The Millionth Word and a DJ set from Paper Tiger of Doomtree fame. (7-10 p.m. All ages. 1101 Stinson Blvd. NE., Mpls. 612-379-4151.)

The REvolution of Evolution Salon at Evolution Salon
The independent salon introduces a brand-new location with red carpet photo ops, live DJs, complimentary food and cocktails, and a live "clean and dirty" hair show. (7-11 p.m. Free. 2836 Lyndale Av. S., Mpls. 612-870-2979.)

SUNDAY

Uptown Market at Lyndale & Dupont
This monthly market held during the months of June through September is offering up its final installment. With four blocks of fine art, crafts, jewelry, produce, and prepared foods, there’s something for everyone – and it provides one of your last chances to buy fresh produce grown in Minnesota, always at killer deals. This month's edition includes newcomers Magic Bus Café and Chef Shack – makers of one of the most delicious pulled-pork sandwiches you’ll find in the Twin Cities. (11 a.m.-5 p.m. Free. 900 W. 29th St., Mpls.)

MONDAY

MNfashion Clothing Swap at Textile Center
Swap the old for the new at this clothing swap officially sanctioned by MNfashion. In this bi-annual event happening during MNfashion Week, fashion fans can bring in their neglected clothing and accessories to trade them in for something else. Participants are instructed to bring in three to 12 items of gently used, clean, rip- and stain-free items; at the end of the night, remaining items will be donated to Goodwill. Refreshments are provided. You never know - you just might walk out with fresh fashion inspiration. (6:30-9:30 p.m. Free. 3000 University Av. SE., Mpls. 612-338-1150.)

TUESDAY

[Ellen Dahl, photographed by Stephen Stephens/Digital Crush]

Re-Fashionista at Second Debut
The recession calls for a good old fashioned clothing swap. And any stylish person photographed for The Sartorialist and The Minneapoline alike will usually cop to wearing something vintage or thrifted within their chic looks. Put on by the team behind the Second Runway fashion show, this night of high-end, second-hand shopping should provide you with some designer goods and shopping tips. Local stylists, including Ellen Dahl (the shooter behind
The Minneapoline and Vita.mn's style page), will be on hand to give advice on how to be a good thrift shopper – vital to being photographed for a street style blog. Entry is free, but you’re encouraged to donate a designer item. (7-9 p.m. Free. 4300 W. 36 1/2 St., St. Louis Park. 651-379-5930.)
